Everyone understands the impact of last fall’s NCAA rule change regarding CHL players. With players from the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL now eligible to play NCAA hockey, the second wave of former CHL players is set to arrive on campus this fall.

The rule is also reshaping how NCAA programs approach recruiting. In fact, some coaches would like to see the timeline pushed back in an effort to standardize the recruitment of older (i.e. junior-aged) players.

Also in today’s newsletter:

  • A full recap of today’s transactions in the transfer portal, including four commitments (to Stonehill, Vermont, and Maine) along with Adam Barone’s entry.

  • Princeton endowed its head coaching position thanks to a donation from a group of alums.

  • Omaha has re-upped its contract with Learfield.

This is issue #673 of the College Hockey Insider newsletter.

How the CHL rule change might impact college hockey’s recruiting timeline

One area that hasn’t been discussed much yet is how the change might impact the college hockey recruiting calendar.

Programs are now recruiting players further along in their development than they were 18 months ago. In fact, some coaches would like to see changes to the recruiting calendar because of it.
