Breaking down the proposed NCAA hockey rule changes for 2026-27

The NCAA ice hockey rules committee has officially released its recommendations for the 2026–27 season.

Several significant rule changes for the men’s game are included in the committee’s proposal. The package now heads to the Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Oversight Committee for review, with a meeting scheduled for later this summer to review the proposals and vote on potential implementation.

Cut-Resistant Equipment Mandated for 2027–28

This mandate will blanket all levels of men’s and women’s ice hockey. Under the proposal, players will be required to wear cut-resistant material protecting their necks, wrists, and ankles starting in the 2027–28 season.

The rules committee plans to meet with equipment manufacturers this summer to iron out implementation details. Meanwhile, D-III programs could receive an exemption, delaying implementation until 2028–29 due to potential budget constraints.
