Boston College’s reported pursuit of goaltender Carter George raised eyebrows around the college hockey world, but the reality behind the situation was far more complicated — and far more instructive — than it initially appeared.

Today’s newsletter (#627) digs into why George was never destined for the NCAA, how his NHL entry-level contract ultimately closed the door, and why his trade in Owen Sound came amid growing uncertainty around eligibility rules. The NCAA has now essentially said where it now draws the line on former pro players playing college sports.

Also in this issue:

  • Some things I think about the ECAC, including thoughts on Princeton and Dartmouth being surprise teams, what Yale might be thinking for its head coaching position, and rumblings that RPI is getting more support institutionally.

  • UMD goalie Adam Gajan is heading to the Olympics.

  • Will Moore was traded in the OHL today, but there’s no indication he’s leaving BC.

  • Michigan picked up a hard-nosed forward for the second half.

  • Notes on some mid-season departures, and Petter Wickström Stumer’s 72-save performance from last Saturday.
