There are still some nonconference games on the schedule this weekend, but for the most part, conference play picks up across every league.

The biggest nonconference matchups are single games: Providence at Quinnipiac, and Michigan State vs. North Dakota in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Austin, Texas.

In conference play, Merrimack and UConn meet in a rematch of last season’s Hockey East championship game, Minnesota Duluth visits Colorado College, and RPI and Union open an intriguing ECAC series after strong starts by both teams.

Last week, there was a lot of talk about Hockey East’s nonconference struggles to start the season. I prefaced the numbers by saying things can change quickly this time of year, and boy, did they. Hockey East entered last weekend just three games above .500 in nonconference play and left it with the second-best nonconference record in the nation, behind only the NCHC, thanks to a 7-3-1 weekend.
