(36) Colgate

Storylines

  • Colgate is coming off an 18-15-3 season. The Raiders fell to Cornell in the ECAC quarterfinals.

  • Mike Harder enters his third season with the program and has a 34-31-7 overall record after taking over for Don Vaughn in 2023.

Analysis

Colgate put together a strong season a year ago, but the Raiders were heavily senior-laden, and it’s only fair to expect some regression with the graduation exodus. Replacing Brett Chorske (34 points), Alex DiPaolo (26 points), and top defenseman Tommy Bergsland (24 points while logging 24 minutes per game) will not be easy.

The silver lining is that several of the team’s best contributors last year were freshmen, and they now return as sophomores. That includes ECAC Rookie of the Year Michael Neumeier on the blue line and Max Nagel (24 points) up front.

Overall, Colgate has enough depth among its forwards to remain a dangerous offensive group. The bigger concern lies on defense. Beyond Neumeier and fellow sophomore Brett Merner, the Raiders don’t appear to have much proven depth, meaning new faces must step up quickly. In goal, senior Andrew Takacs returns after posting a .903 save percentage in 32 games last season.

Bold Prediction: Colgate’s power play will be top-four in the ECAC

Colgate’s power play was among the nation’s weakest last season, finishing 47th overall. Still, the pieces are in place for the Raiders to build a top-four unit in the ECAC. It will lean heavily on the top group, but Michael Neumeier is a steady quarterback at the point, and the program has enough top-six forward depth to form a dangerous combination.
