Today’s mailbag tackles the following topics:
Is there any update on the proposed ban on midseason player additions?
After Tuesday’s election results, where do things stand with the proposed college sports legislation in Congress?
Will Maryville’s games count for opponents in the NPI?
What are the current nonconference records for each league?
If I had to pick 16 teams to make the NCAA Tournament right now, who would they be?
Q. Any update on the proposed ban on midseason additions? — Will S.
Yes. The NCAA Division I Cabinet has delayed the vote. Initially, the cabinet was expected to vote on the proposal during its Oct. 6-7 meeting and implement the policy immediately. That has changed. Now, the cabinet is expected to vote on the proposal in January, and if approved, the policy will take effect Aug. 1, 2027.
That means midyear enrollees are still allowed in hockey (and other sports that span two semesters) this season. However, that will likely change for the start of the 2027-28 season.
Q. After the results of last night’s election, do you think there is a better chance that the college sports acts get passed or a lesser chance that the college sports acts get passed in Congress? — Mary S.
There are two proposals that we’re talking about here, and I think they have distinctly different answers.
