Gavin McKenna arrested, charged with felony assault in Pennsylvania
Penn State forward and potential No. 1 NHL Draft pick Gavin McKenna was arrested Saturday night and is facing felony aggravated assault charges in Pennsylvania following an alleged incident that resulted in an individual suffering a broken jaw.
Onward State was the first to report the story on Wednesday.
College Hockey Insider has obtained a copy of the criminal docket.
According to the report, McKenna was arrested after an incident in the 100 block of South Pugh Street. The police report was filed shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Onward State sources indicated that the team had been at a downtown bar with friends and family following Saturday afternoon’s outdoor game at Beaver Stadium. McKenna is alleged to have assaulted an individual, resulting in a broken jaw.
According to the criminal docket, McKenna faces four charges:
Aggravated assault — attempts to cause serious bodily injury or causes injury with extreme indifference (felony)
Simple assault (M2)
Harassment — subjecting another to physical contact (S)
Disorderly conduct — engaging in fighting
As of Feb. 4, the case is awaiting a preliminary hearing. McKenna did not request a public defender.
The felony charge alone carries a maximum sentence in Pennsylvania of up to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine. Probation is also possible instead of, or following, incarceration (at the judge’s discretion). Judges can sentence below or above sentencing guideline ranges (if an individual is convicted), but they must state reasons on the record.
I’ll have an update on this story in our next newsletter.
