College Hockey Playoff Roundup (3/14)
One of college hockey’s busiest weekends kicked off on Friday night.
Here’s a recap of Friday’s playoff action.
Atlantic Hockey
Holy Cross 3, Army 2 (OT)
Holy Cross leads series 1-0
Devin Phillips scored 3:15 into overtime to give Holy Cross a series lead over Army in the AHA semifinals. Army outshot Holy Cross 47-39. Mac Gadowsky scored his 16th goal of the season for Army in the first period. Thomas Gale made 45 saves for the Crusaders.
Bentley 5, Sacred Heart 2
Bentley leads series 1-0
Sacred Heard scored the first two goals of the game just 12 minutes into the first period, but Bentley stormed back with five unanswered. The Falcons had two power-play goals in the second period and A.J. Hodges had a natural hat trick in the third period. Bentley outshot SHU 35-22.
ECAC
Clarkson 3, Harvard 2
Clarkson leads series 1-0
Clarkson limited Harvard to just 17 shots on goal in its Game 1 victory. Harvard scored first in the first period. Clarkson had three third-period goals, including two from Ryan Bottrill.
Cornell 4, Colgate 1
Cornell leads series 1-0
The Big Red put the game away with two third-period goals, including an empty-netter on the power play. Alex DiPaolo scored for Colgate.
Quinnipiac 4, Brown 1
Quinnipiac leads series 1-0
The home team got off to a fast start and took a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. Jeremy Wilmer made it 2-0 in the second period and Andone Cerbone scored midway through the third period before Tyler Kopff scored for Brown.
Dartmouth 3, Union 2
Dartmouth leads series 1-0
The Big Green won a back-and-forth game in Schenectady. Union took a 1-0 lead on Lucas Buzziol’s first-period goal, but Nikita Nikora tied the game four minutes later.
Union took the lead back with Josh Nixon’s 13th of the season, but Braiden Dorfman scored late in the second period to tie the game. Dartmouth took its first lead 7:33 into the third period when Sean Chisolm scored his 14th of the season.
Dartmouth wasn’t penalized in the game.
Hockey East
Connecticut 3, Providence 1
Connecticut advances to HEA semifinal
Guillaume Richard scored a shorthanded goal 3:44 into the game, but UConn goalie Tyler Muszelik was perfect after that, leading the Huskies to a 3-1 win.
Hudson Schandor scored his 10th goal of the season in the second period, which tied the game at 1-1. Joey Muldowney’s 23rd and 24th goals of the season clinched the game in the third period.
Providence will still make the NCAA Tournament as an at-large berth.
NCHC
Western Michigan 6, St. Cloud State 2
Western leads series 1-0
Isak Posch was pulled in his second straight game against WMU. The Broncoes scored five goals in the first 37 minutes of the game. Matteo Constantini and Iiro Hakkarainen scored twice. Both of Constanini’s goals were power-play goals, with Verner Miettinen in the box for SCSU both times.
North Dakota 3, Omaha 2
North Dakota leads series 1-0
Omaha led 2-1 after the first period but two goals from Cade Littler lifted North Dakota past the Mavericks. UND had zero shots in the third period, but Omaha couldn’t find the net. Final shots on goal were 33-18 in favor of Omaha.
Colorado College 3, Denver 1
Colorado College leads series 1-0
The Tigers scored three times in the third period to take a series lead at Denver. Ty Gallagher, Brady Cleveland, and Noah Laba all scored for CC.
Arizona State 4, Minnesota Duluth 3
Arizona State leads series 1-0
The Sun Devils won their first NCHC playoff game after Anthony Dowd scored the game-winning goal 5:39 into the third period. The goal was Dowd’s second of the season. UMD outshot ASU 31-23.
